Mistfall Hunter Classes — Roles, Stances and How to Choose
Mistfall Hunter has six launch classes: Withered Knight, Sorcerer, Blackarrow, Seer, Shadowstrix and Mercenary. Official marketing describes two weapon stances per class, switchable between fights — but treat that as the design framework: Blackarrow's Javelin stance is reportedly delayed to Season 2 and Sorcerer's second stance is undocumented. The comparison table below covers role, stances, difficulty and solo/team/PvP fit, with links to detailed builds.
The six classes at a glanceOfficialOfficial
The launch roster is Withered Knight, Sorcerer, Blackarrow, Seer, Shadowstrix and Mercenary. Official materials describe every class as having two weapon stances you can switch between fights, plus talents, active skills and gem affixes that define your build. [1] All six classes are playable solo or in squads of up to three. [1]
The August 6 live update already adjusted balance for several classes including Blackarrow and Withered Knight, and Bellring says tuning will continue — so treat any fixed class strength claims, including third-party ones on this page, as dated snapshots. [2]
Design framework vs what you can actually play
Steam marketing says 'two stances per class' as the design framework, but current availability does not fully match it. Third-party records indicate Blackarrow's second stance (Javelin) is delayed to Season 2, and Sorcerer's second stance is not yet documented in public sources. Name spellings also vary between sources: Blackarrow / Black Arrow and Shadowstrix / Shadow Strix. Check the in-game class screen before planning a build around an unreleased stance. [1] [3]
Class comparison tableOfficialThird-partyThird-party
| Class | Role | Stances / weapons | Learning curve | Solo fit | Team fit | PvP fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Withered Knight | Melee bruiser / frontline | Greatsword (Wither/Execute) · Polearm & Shield | Low–medium | Good — sustain and melee pressure | Strong frontline for trios | Strong — see the Withered Knight build |
| Sorcerer | Ranged spellcaster | Documented staff/caster kit · second stance undocumented | Medium–high | Good ranged pressure; beta-era sources rated it top-tier in mixed PvE+PvP [4] | Strong backline damage | Strong when protected, fragile when caught |
| Blackarrow | Ranged archer / skirmisher | Bow kit available · Javelin stance reportedly delayed to Season 2 [3] | Medium | Good — ranged poke suits solo kiting | Flexible ranged DPS | Strong poke; was touched by the Aug 6 balance pass [2] |
| Seer | Support / caster | Reverent (support) · Catalyst (kiting) | Medium | Playable solo with the Catalyst route — see the Seer build | Best-in-slot team support | Situational; shines with a coordinated trio |
| Shadowstrix | Melee assassin | Dual-wield style rogue kit per third-party class matrix [3] | High | Community and opinion sources lean Shadowstrix for solo play — see best solo class | Needs team cover; picks off stragglers | High ceiling, punishing when misplayed [4] |
| Mercenary | Tank / parry fighter | Sword & Shield (parry) · Hammer | Low — most forgiving starter | Good; several third parties call it the beginner pick | Anchor tank for trios | Durable, lower burst — see the Mercenary build |
Where this table comes fromOfficialThird-partyThird-party
The class list and the two-stance design framework come from official Steam materials. [1] The weapon matrix is cross-checked against The Games Wiki class page (last edited 2026-08-06); that page openly declares it was drafted with AI assistance and then human-edited, so we use it for structure only and treat its per-weapon details as needing in-game confirmation. [3]
Difficulty and PvP impressions draw on GameSpot's June 17 beta-era class assessment (author Billy Givens), which judged all six classes across PvE and PvP combined. That is open-beta data — a historical baseline from before launch and the August patches, not a current ranking. [4] For how rankings look after the Aug 6 patch, see the tier list.
Class switching and character creationOfficial
What is confirmed: weapon stances can be switched between fights, so one character can flex between its class's two kits as the situation changes. [1] What is not confirmed by our sources: whether you can change a character's class after creation, or whether a new class means a new character. We do not assert either way — the character creation guide tracks what is adjustable after creation and gets updated as official documentation clarifies this.
Class choice is made at character creation and shapes your starting stances and talent options, but it does not lock your playstyle permanently: talents, skills and gem affixes can be reworked as you gear up. [1]
Which class should you pick?Third-party
- New to extraction games: Mercenary's parry-and-shield kit is the most forgiving way to learn the loop.
- Playing mostly alone: compare candidates by goal on the best solo class page instead of trusting one universal pick.
- Ranged pressure: Sorcerer or Blackarrow — but note Blackarrow's second stance is reportedly not out yet. [3]
- Team player: Seer fills the dedicated support slot; Withered Knight anchors the frontline.
- High mechanical ceiling: Shadowstrix rewards assassination play but punishes mistakes. [4]
- Whatever you pick, test both stances in the training ground before investing — then check the build hub for a starter setup.
